LAHORE: The contest for the Aquafina Golf Medal Tournament took place yesterday at the beautiful par-72 Royal Palm Club golf course. Conditions at the golf course were most demanding for these amateur competitors and as expected, even the talented ones got cowed down by the pressure of competition and their chances of achieving glory faded away as putting jitters took over. Whereas many failed in their efforts, there were others who performed appropriately, with good application of golfing skills, and outwitted the challenge of the golf course.
Abbas Ali Khan was consistent during the 18 holes and so was his brother Raza Ali Khan. They turned out to be front runners in the gross section in handicap category zero to twelve. Abbas won the top position and the title, while Raza was the runner-up. In the same handicap category, the net section top performer was Faisal Sayid, generally regarded as a player with significant competitive ability. Again he maintained and played in line with his reputation and won the first net prize. Hamid Sharif was the runner-up.
In the amateur handicap category 13 to 18, the ones who ended up in glory were Umair Butt in gross section and Waqar Butt in gross. Others who ended up happy with their performances were Dr Tashbeeb and Mohammad Ashraf. At the conclusion of the tournament, Omer Mir, General Manager of Royal Palm Club, awarded prizes to the top performers.
