DUBAI: England downed Pakistan by 14 in the first Twenty20 International of a three-match series at Dubai Stadium here on Thursday night. Chasing a modest target of 161, skipper Shahid Afridi and charges crumbled and could manage only 146 all out in their allotted overs. Only Sohaib Maqsood (24), Sohail Tanvir (25 not out) and Wahab Riaz (21) showed some resistance. Reece Topley (3-24) and Liam Plunkett (3-21) ripped through Pakistan’s batting line-up and shared six wickets between them. It was a poor show from 2009 Twenty20 world champions. Earlier, England, who won the toss and opted to bat first, scored 160-5 in their allotted 20 overs. Sam Billings scored a career best 25-ball 53, skipper Eoin Morgan chipped in with 45 not out and debutant James Vince scored a 36-ball 41 as England smashed 59 in the last five overs. For Pakistan, left-arm paceman Tanvir grabbed 2-31. England rested Joe Root and Jos Buttler for the first T20. While both players remain first-choice selections in this format, the England management has decided to take a look at other players with a view to helping them make informed decisions about squad selection ahead of the World T20. James Vince made his T20I debut – he has never batted in international cricket, having played in one rained-ruined ODI in Ireland. Pakistan, meanwhile, were forced into two changes. Ahmad Shahzad missed the game due to illness, while Shoaib Malik was injured. That ensured that Rafatullah Mohmand made his international debut at the age of 39. The remaining two matches will be played in Dubai on Friday (today) and Sharjah on Monday.
