I did my best to give Pakistan its due status at ICC: Sethi

LAHORE - Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Najam Sethi has said that he did his best to give Pakistan its due status at the forum of the International Cricket Council (ICC) and now Pakistan will earn ample revenue in coming years due to its international cricket commitments.


"As chairman, I put in my best efforts to make sure that Pakistan gets its due status in ICC as far as revenue generation is concerned and its future cricket ties are concerned," he said while speaking at a reception hosted in his honour by former Lahore City Cricket Association president Khawaja Nadeem Ahmad here on Thursday night.


Also present were Shakeel Sheikh, member of the PCB management committee, NCA director Haroon ur Rahseed, clubs organizers from all the three zones of the LCCA. Sethi said he was leaving PCB contended and on a satisfactory note as the future of the country is fully secured in terms of revenue generation from its future tour programme in the next eight years.


"When I took over PCB was nowhere at the forum of ICC and the formation of BIG 3 put a question mark on the future of our international cricket but we made resolute efforts to realize the ICC that Pakistan is an important cricket playing member country and its due rights and share should be given to it in a dignified manner," he added.


"I am leaving with good memories as the things are in order in PCB and its most of the problems have been resolved and I anticipate a bright future of Pakistan cricket in coming years." He said that he was delighted to see a big gathering of club cricket organizers who are united at one platform for the cause of grass root cricket in Lahore. He praised efforts of Khawaja Nadeem for the revival and overall development of the club cricket during his three years tenure.


In his address of welcome, Nadeem re-counted the efforts and services of Najam Sethi for the betterment of Pakistan cricket, especially at an international level. "It was Najam's wisdom and expertise which re-established Pakistan’s status at the ICC," he said, adding that Najam Sethi was the man of his words because when he took over as PCB chairman, he made it clear at that time that he would not be contesting the election of the PCB chairman as he does not have the intention to stay longer.


Speaking on the occasion, Shakeel Sheikh praised the efforts of Najam Sethi for Pakistan cricket. "We have seen a significant rise in Pakistan cricket despite that sour reality that PCB faced a lot of problems due to which our cricket suffered a lot but Najam lifted the PCB out of gloom and helped Pakistan to get its due status at ICC," he said.
