LAHORE: The inaugural Friends of Golf Tournament, contested at the par 72 Royal Palm Club Golf Course, brought honours for Hussain Hamid who emerged as the gross winner in zero to twelve handicap category and upcoming talented one Haris Naseer in the net section of this handicap category here on Sunday. Both of these young participants overcame the challenge posed by many skilled golfers and while Hussain and Haris remained steady and on course and carved out victories for themselves through accuracy oriented hitting and shot making, quite a few skilled ones had to be content with positions that were way down the winning ladder. In this regard, Abdullah Sharif performed well on sixteen holes but poor play on two holes, one of which he triple bogeyed and one was double bogeyed, cost him success in this championship. Other strong contenders who messed up their scores through a couple of errant tee shots were Zia Maqbool, Hafiz M Yousaf, Dr Mohsin Anwar and Khurram Hussain. In the handicap category 13 to 18, the wonder golfer turned out to be Shahid Karim who tasted flavour of a gross victory for the first time. And he looked a little emotional about this moment in his golf career and appears determined to stay in line for winning honours in tournaments to come. Results: Handicap category 0-12: Hussain Hamid (first gross), Col Jameel Khalid (2nd gross), Haris Naseer (first net), Asim Tiwana (2nd net) Handicap category: Shahid Karim (first gross), Imran F Mian (2nd gross), Zafar Iqbal (first net), Iftikhar Taj Mian (2nd net). Maximum birdies prize: Ashraf Bhatti.
