LAHORE: International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive officer David Richardson on Friday congratulated Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf on his restoration. While talking on the telephone, the ICC chief executive felicitated Ashraf and expressed the hope that Ashraf would work for the betterment of the PCB. Richardson also assured full support to the PCB for return of international cricket in Pakistan.
A division bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday reinstated Ashraf as PCB chairman, following a long complicated legal process. The two-member bench, consisting of Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan and Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi, announced its judgment on an appeal filed by Ashraf against his dismissal last July. Ashraf was suspended from the post in May last year by Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of the same court after it was ruled that he was elected via a ‘dubious’ and ‘polluted’ process.
After Ashraf’s dismissal, the government appointed veteran journalist Najam Aziz Sethi as acting chairman but the same bench later also stopped him from exercising his full powers and ordered him to hold fresh elections. During the conversation, Ashraf also requested for extension in the naming of Pakistan’s Twenty20 team for the world event and Richardson informed that the team’s name could be sent in next three days
Meanwhile, Ashraf has stated that his reinstatement as the board chief by the Islamabad High Court is a ‘historic decision’ calling it a ‘victory of justice’. “It is a historic decision for Pakistan cricket that a court restored a PCB chief. My reinstatement is a victory of justice and a result of prayers of several PCB employees,” he maintained.
