Asian Team and 6-Red Snooker Championships offer lucrative cash awards

KARACHI: Handsome cash prizes to the tune of Rs 2.3 million will be offered in the 2nd Asian Team Snooker Championship and 6-Red Snooker Championship to be played simultaneously at Khorshed Hall of Hotel Avari Towers here from August 17 to 23. The details of the two championships and prize money were announced by the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) at a press conference on Wednesday. Former world squash champion Jahangir Khan, Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, PBSA president Alamgir Shaikh and other officials were present on the occasion.  A total of 42 players representing 21-nations will be battling for top honors in the week-long continental gala. Alamgir expressed his doubts over the participation of India but added all efforts were on for the championships. He said the teams would start arriving here from Friday (tomorrow) while an official of the Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports, Joseph Lou and chief referee, would reach on Thursday (today).
The winners of the team title will get a gold medal and $6750, runners-up will pick up silver medal and $4500 while third position team will collect bronze medal and $2250. In the 6-Red Championship the winner will take $5250 and gold medal, runner-up silver medal and $2625 while losing semifinalists will pocket bronze medals and $750 each. In all 42 cueists, representing Afghanistan, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia. Singapore, Syria, Thailand and United Arab Emirates, will take part in the 6-Red Championship. Pakistan’s Muhammad Asif will be defending his 6-Red crown that he won in Qatar. As many as 21 teams will be competing in the Team Championship with India defending their title. Pakistan will be fielding four teams after getting permission from the Asian Confederation of Billiards Sports.
