LAHORE: The 8th Infotech Golf Championship held at the par72, Royal Palm Club Golf Course over 18 holes concluded here on Sunday with much fanfare and the star of the championship turned out to be Shoaib Shams who was crowned the Infotech Champion 2014 after a brilliant display of accurate hitting and consistent all round application of golfing skills. By virtue of his gross score of 76, Shoaib managed to emerge as the front runner thus curbing the chances of champions like Sameer Iftikhar, Sardar Murad, Mohsen Zafar, Azfer Hassan and Raza Ali Khan.
The run of play in this Infotech endorsed competition was fierce indeed and Naseer Akhtar the spirit behind this stroke play tournament was pleased with the quality of play. The ultimate winner in gross section, Shoaib, carded three birdies on holes 11, 13 and 16 supplemented by eight regulation pars and in between he had to contend with seven bogies also which included three putts on four greens. As for the runner-up in gross section, Sameer was also at his best but ultimately lost to Shoaib by one stroke. Others who produced good scores in gross section and missed out victory were Mohsen, Ayaz Saleem, Raza and Anas Ahmed, all bunched together at a score of gross 80.
In the contest for net honours in handicap category 0-12, the forceful one turned out to be Rashid Akbar. He has a handicap of 9 and during the Infotech event he appeared really charged up and played like a mature champion. Noticeable were his drives off the tees on the par fours and fives and his putting skills were equally superb. With a net round of 69, he was the top one in net section. The runner-up slot went to Dr Nasrullah who had a round of net 70.
Top performers in handicap category 13 -18 were Fareed Malik (winner gross), Abdul Islam (runner-up gross), Umair Butt (winner net) and Haroon Ali Khan (runner-up net). Nearest to the pin prize was claimed by Dr Mohsin and longest drive by Annas Ahmed. Samee and Shoaib shared the maximum birdies prize.
At the conclusion of the championship, the CEO of Infotech, Naseer Akhter, awarded prizes to the winners in a ceremony attended by Asad IA Khan, Parvez Qureshi, Max Babri, Mohammad Tariq and participating golfers. Naseer committed that such golf events would also be held in Islamabad and Karachi and Infotech would also support upcoming golf professionals.
