LAHORE: The 8th Royal Palm Amateur Golf Team Trophy and Challenge Shield Championship will commence at the Royal Palm Club Golf Course here on Friday (today). Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Royal Palm Club general manager Omer Mir said that in a championship of this level, the venue and the playing arena had an extremely important role to play. Also present on the occasion were director golf Jameel Khalid and director media of the tournament Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed.
“And since Royal Palm Golf and Country Club is the venue and Royal Palm Golf Course is the competition arena, the participating competitors are going to like every facet of the facilities and the challenge of the golf course,” he added.
Spelling out the history of the event, Jameel stated it was an annual event of the golf calendar but was abandoned in 2000. “The Royal Palm Club re-introduced the event in 2006 based on its unique format where club teams get an opportunity to compete against each other in an effort to bring honours to their parent clubs.” The events at stake are Royal Palm Team Trophy, Gross Cup, Net Challenge Shield and an event for women. The Royal Palm Team Trophy will be contested over three rounds, with final round to be played on Sunday. Golf clubs from all over Pakistan have fielded their teams while the major clubs like Lahore Gymkhana, Lahore Garrison and Royal Palm have entered two four-member teams.
As for format of the Team Trophy, on each day of play, the best three gross scores of each team will be counted towards the final aggregate team total at the end of the tournament. In the individual competition for the Gross Cup, players with a handicap of 12 and below are eligible to participate.
Running in conjunction with the main Team Trophy, the Gross Cup will be contested over the three tournament days. The defending champion is Aleem ur Rehman and is a contender once again. Others in the run are players of ability like Taimur Khan and Adnan Khan from (Peshawar), Zulfiqar Ali and Ashiq Hussain (Multan), Sajid Khan (Arabian Sea) Zuaib Asif (DHA Karachi), Sardar Murad, Sameer Iftikhar, Aleem ur Rehman , Salman Jehangir, Wazir Ali, Ahmed Zafar Hayat, Qasim Khan and Waleed Zubair (Lahore Gymkhana), Fakhar Imam, Shafiq Bhatti, Asif Mehdi and M Shafi (Defence Raya), Mohsen Zafar, Omer Salamat, Shoaib Shams (Royal Palm), Tariq Mahmood and Wajid Ali (Islamabad), Ansar Mehmood, Mansoor Teli, Aly Rana, Rizwan Feroz (Karachi), Tariq Mahmood and Wajid Ali (Islamabad).
Pervaiz said the Challenge Shield was on net score. “In this event also players with handicap of 12 and below are eligible. The Shield will be contested on the first two days of the tournament,” he added. Based on handicap scores, a wide range of players will be in contention for this title. In the contest amongst women, Miss Ghazala Yasmin will be defending her tile whereas others Mrs Tahira Nazir (Rawalpindi) Mrs Asma Shami (Garrison), Tahmina Rashid (GYM), Mrs Samia Javed Ali, Nighat Akram, Maryama Khan,Noorie Zaman Khan (Gymkhana) and Ami Quin, Malhia Elahi and Zenat from Islamabad are all set to snatch the title from her. In all, 130 golfers will be contesting for their personal and clubs glory.
