'Ajmal issue will be solved through Plan B'

Moin calls for bold decisions in interest of Pakistan cricket

KARACHI - Pakistan Cricket Team Chief Selector and Manager Moin Khan has called for some bold decisions and steps to make national team a formidable unit ahead of next year's World Cup.

"I was disappointed with the performance of the team against Sri Lanka. But as team was playing after long layoff that could be reason for their failure," he told reporters at National Stadium, Karachi after a meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Shaharyar M Khan on Thursday. Moin Khan said that performance of some players was not up to the mark and some bold steps were needed in the interest of team. He admitted that there are some worries because some players were not coming up to the expectations.

He, however, did not support the change in the captain Misbah-ul-Haq just for one bad series. "Misbah has been doing well and you cannot change him after one bad series. Personally I believe in stability and continuity. But the PCB chairman is final authority to take the decisions," former Pakistan captain said. Commenting on the dark clouds hovering over the career of ace off-spinner Saeed Ajmal for suspect action, he said that they would be looking for possible replacement in case of any problem.

"We are working on 'plan B' in case of any issue with Saeed and I am discussing the issue with spin coach Mushtaq Ahmed to have a look on new spinners," he said. Moin said that he personally felt that wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed should have been retained for one-day series after superb batting show in Test series against Sri Lanka. "As the team for One-day series was already named Head Coach Waqar Younis wanted to go with Umar Akmal," he said.

Responding to a question about enjoying two positions in the team as chief selector and manager, he said that it was not difficult for him to handle both positions. However, he said that if anything came from the PCB he will accept it. Answering a question regarding poor performance of the team despite presence of large number of officials in the team, Moin said that everyone had been working hard to motivate the team. He also complimented the role of new Batting Coach Grant Flower but added it could not be done in a short time.
