Ex-Premier League player accused of bribery

LONDON: Former Premier League footballer Delroy Facey has been charged with conspiracy to commit bribery, Britain's National Crime Agency revealed on Monday.

The 34-year-old former striker, who played for Bolton Wanderers in the top flight between 2002 and 2004, has been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into match-fixing in the United Kingdom. The probe saw three men Chann Sankaran, Krishna Ganeshan, and Michael Boateng convicted in June for paying footballers to influence the outcomes of lower-league matches so they could benefit by betting on the result.

Facey, whose other clubs include Huddersfield Town, West Bromwich Albion, and Hull City, was first arrested in November 2013. He is due to appear before a court in Staffordshire, central England on Tuesday. Another man arrested as part of the same investigation, Moses Swaibu, faces a retrial after a jury was unable to reach a verdict on his case in June. He will appear in court in Birmingham on September 19.
