Major power breakdown hits city, affects civic life

KARACHI: Major power breaking down from mourning to evening badly affected social and business life across Karachi on Friday.The people faced miseries when water supply in the city was also halted due to electricity breakdown at all KWSB pumping stations, causing disturbance in the preparations for Jumatul Wida and Itikaf prayers at mosques.Mohammad Javed, who was sitting in Ititak at a mosque told PPI that acute water supply had deprived them of taking bath. He said that they even do not have water for ablution and had to purchase bottled water for this purpose. The Friday sermons and prayers were also disturbed due to electricity breakdown as scholars had to deliver their sermons without loud speakers. Government and private hospitals also faced difficulties due to electricity shutdown. Several operations were postponed, while the patients in government hospitals OPDs also had to suffer due to the breakdown. Senior medical officer of Civil Hospital Karachi told PPI that they had to postpone operations while hundreds of patients had to return back to homes due to non-functioning of machines and other equipment at the departments of radiology, physiotherapy, ENT, chest, family planning and dental OPD due to the power breakdown. The electricity shutdowns also affected petrol supply from pumps as the travellers were forced to wait for long hours. We have generators but long hours of load shedding had forced us to keep them shut them, causing disruption in electricity supply, a petrol pump owner Mohammad Awan said.Meanwhile, Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan has taken notice of the power breakdown in the provincial capital. He said the public should be taken into confidence over the power breakdown and the issue should be resolved.The Muttahida Qaumi Movement coordination committee also took notice of the power breakdown in Karachi and Hyderabad. The party condemned the situation, as saying it was imperative that both cities should have uninterrupted power supply.
