Three profiteers jailed, 71 fined


KARACHI: In a crackdown against profiteers, 71 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 198,800 fine for selling commodities beyond the rates set by government. Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates. He further said that city administration had focused only those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi and Model Colony. In the crackdown, 41 milkmen, 13 shopkeepers of general commodities, 10 chicken sellers, six vegetable mongers and one fruit seller, were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while three persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
