SHC directs police to provideprotection to rape victim

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) on Saturday directed the Sindh Police to provide protection to the 21-year-old rape victim. She had approached the SHC, seeking registration of case against two individuals involved in sexual assault. The petitioner R*, a resident of Korangi, impleaded home secretary, provincial police chief, head of Saddar police station and the two accused of rape, Sunny and Aakash, as respondents. She submitted in her petition that she had a relation with Sunny, with whom she wanted to marry, but he repeatedly rejected the offer. She told the judge through her counsel that Sunny forcibly raped her on September 14, where his aide Akash was also present. R* said that although she approached the Hindu Panchayat for justice, it was to no avail. She also went to Saddar police station to lodge an official complaint, which referred her to the women police station; yet the FIR could not be registered. Victim claimed that the police was helping the alleged rapists, who constantly threatened her of dire consequences. A medical report, she said, dated October 21, was also with her, which confirmed she was sexually assaulted. She appealed the court to help her and issue directives to the police to register case against the accused. Chief Justice Maqbool Baqar issued notices to respondents and adjourned the hearing of the case until January 31, 2014.
