70 shopkeepers fined, five profiteers held

KARACHI: As many as 70 shopkeepers were challaned and a collective fine of Rs 126,000 was imposed on them for selling goods in violation of the official price lists of essential commodities, while five profiteers were also arrested. Karachi Commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqi said that an operation against profiteering was underway in the city by the divisional and districts administrations, said a statement on Thursday. The action against profiteers was taken in different areas, including Jamshed Quarters, Garden, Korangi, Orangi, Bin Qasim and North Nazimabad areas. A total of 28 milk sellers, four fruit vendors, three vegetable merchants, two grocers, 32 chicken sellers and a flour seller were challaned for violating the price lists. The commissioner also assigned duties to the administrative officers at the time of auction of fruits and vegetables to check and control the artificial shortage of fruits and vegetables so as to provide relief to the masses. The commissioner said that the crackdown on profiteers would continue until the time the sale of essential items was ensured in accordance with the price lists.
