Explosion claims woman’s life, injures another

KARACHI: A woman was killed and her daughter-in-law injured when a low-intensity explosion took place near Imambargah at Khalid Bin Waleed Road, Ferozabad on Wednesday.
The incident took place when a bag having toys exploded near the Imambargah at Khalid Bin Waleed Road, and was heard by many people at distance. Following the explosion, an extra contingent of law enforcers and rescue teams reached the site.
Body and injured were shifted to the Jinnah Hospital by rescue workers; however law enforcers condoned off the entire locality to avoid any untoward incident.
Following the explosion, family members of the victims reached the hospital and identified the sufferers. The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Nasreen, wife of Rab Nawaz and her daughter-in-law as Azra, wife of Amir.
“We are not terrorists; we belong to a poor family, but in news my mother and wife were declared suicide bombers. This is not fair,” said the injured woman’s husband.
The injured woman, Azra, told the police that they “found a shopping bag from roadside, which had toys. We carried it along, and after a while there was an explosion in the bag”.
According to Sindh police’s spokesman, the incident was not an attack or attempted sabotage, and the victims belong to a poor Seraiki family from Multan. “They live in the slum area of Lines Area and work in various houses to earn their livelihood,” said the spokesman.
He added, “while coming back from work they found a bag on the roadside and picked it up. It exploded within no time, killing Nasreen and injuring her daughter-in-law.”
There is a possibility that unidentified culprits placed the bag containing a hand grenade to scare a car showroom owner for extortion, while investigation in this regard is underway, added police officials.
“We haven’t found any clue which suggests that it was a terrorist activity. As of now we can only term it as an accident,” said District East SSP Pir Mohammad Shah while talking to Daily Times. “We have questioned all their family members and they have no link with terrorists.”
SSP Shah said the investigators believe the injured woman’s statement was true, adding that the police did not arrest anyone from their family but called them for the questioning. Talking about the explosives, he said it was a hand grenade explosion. No case was registered till filling of this news report.
