2,551 profiteers fined, 257 sent to jail in Ramazan

KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the operation against profiteers has been expedited in the holy month of Ramazan for giving common men special relief and the process of charging fines and sending the profiteers jail was being carried out massively. In the first 11 days of Ramazan 2551 shopkeepers have been fined with Rs 4,830,500 and 257 sent to jail for selling commodities above government rates, Siddiqui said this while addressing a meeting at his office. Additional Commissioner Karachi II and Chairman Price Committee Haji Ahmed, Deputy Director Price Committee Asif Iqbal and In-charge Complaint Cell Commissioner Office Syed Zahid Hussain were also present on the occasion. He further said that deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners of the six districts have been busy in crackdown against profiteers. In the crackdown in Ramazan, 468 milkmen have been fined Rs1784500, 124 shopkeepers of general commodities fined Rs538000, 330 chicken sellers fined Rs768500, 13 meat sellers fined 62500, 906 vegetable sellers fined Rs 832100, 26 flour sellers fined Rs77200 and 684 fruit sellers fined Rs 785700 for selling essential items at excessive prices. The commissioner directed that the people challenging the writ of government by not following government rates should be dealt with iron hand.
