Governor assents to Sindh Shaheed Recognition, Compensation Act 2014

KARACHI: Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan ascended Sindh Shaheed Recognition and Compensation Act-2014 which shall come into force with immediate effect. This is enacted to honour and recognize the services of persons who sacrifice their lives in act of terrorism while performing duty and to provide compensation to their legal heirs in the province of Sindh, said an official statement here on Wednesday. According to the Act, ‘person’ means a government servant posted to or serving under Government and includes personnel of Sindh Police department or official of any law enforcement agency transferred to serve under or working for the government. ‘Shaheed’ means a person who offered scarifies of his life in line of duty in countering terrorism or becomes victim of an act of terrorism operation or targeted and killed by terrorists group and declared shaheed in the manner prescribed by the government. The Act said that the government can grant posthumous promotion to next grade to person embracing shahadat. The government may for the purpose of recognition of the services of the Shaheed person recommend to the Federal Government for grant of civil, military or police award or medal as it may deem appropriate, it said. The government shall, from time to time, determine the award compensation in shape of monetary grant to the legal heirs of the shaheed person. The government shall, in addition to financial compensation, induct at least two members of the family being the legal heirs of shaheed person into service of government in relaxation of the conditions of qualifications and age to the extent as it may deem appropriate. In view of the Act the government also has to take steps for the welfare of families of shaheed persons and it may establish a fund for the welfare of families of shaheed, the statement said.
