KARACHI: Pakistan Rangers Sindh Director General Maj-Gen Bilal Akbar has said that Karachi operation will continue with full force without any discrimination. “Despite the ongoing push and pull, I have been clearly instructed by the head of the armed forces and the federal government to go on with operation. The future of Karachi operation is bright and solid. It will continue until it reaches its logical conclusion,” DG Rangers said. In a meeting with the business community, the Rangers chief said no action will be taken against any businessman or industrialist who has somehow been the victim of extortion. He said such individuals are not being considered as ‘facilitators’. He agreed to a proposal by the business community to formulate a coordination committee of the KCCI with whom the paramilitary force will discuss suspicious activity by any businessman or industrialist and share evidences prior to taking action against him. “Not a single member of the business community will be taken into custody on the basis of suspicion only. As of today, I don’t have anything serious against any businessman, any industrialist or any trader,” he said. The Rangers chief said the security situation in Karachi has improved to a certain extent. “The element of fear has reduced and it will go down further in the days to come,” he said, and added the operation is not against any political entity. “It’s only against criminals and will continue without any discrimination. We will never allow anyone to hold strikes, shut down petrol pumps or set ablaze vehicles,” he added. In response to concerns expressed by the businessmen over rising street crimes and failure of the police force to control the situation, the DG Rangers said that his force is planning to effectively deal with rising street crime in the city. Referring to suggestions about depoliticising and capacity building of police along with implementation of an effective system for ensuring sustainable peace in Karachi so that police could become capable enough to maintain peace even after the conclusion of Karachi operation in the next two to three years, the DG Rangers said that reformation of police must go hand in hand with the ongoing Karachi operation.
