District disaster management authorities to be established

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to set up district disaster management authorities to be headed by deputy commissioners across the province to deal with monsoon rains.The decision was taken at a high level meeting presided over by Sindh Minister for Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Makhdoom Jamiluzzaman to review measures to cope with any situation arises out of rains, floods or drought.The district disaster management authorities will have MPAs and MNAs and representatives of industries and agriculture as its members. The meeting was told that less than normal rainfall is expected this season, which may create wide-scale drought conditions in the province’s arid zone and desert, specially Tharparkar, Sanghar and Kohistan.It was told that currently there is severe shortage of potable water in Tharparkar and cattle may catch infections, while both human and cattle may be largely affected due to shortage of rainfall in Kohistan.The meeting was told that the work on the installation of water plants in various areas of Tharparkar has been started, while wheat will also be made available to the low-income people on subsidised rates under the directive of the Sindh Chief Minister. It was told that this year rains are likely after 15th of September, and a proposal to declare any rain affected areas as calamity hit is under consideration. The meeting decided to fill any vacant posts in the Revenue and Relief department at the earliest to avoid any problems in relief activities.Provincial Minister Makhdoom Jamiluddin directed the officials concerned to prepare contingency plans in all the districts and convene the meetings of the district disaster management authorities and send reports about relief and precautionary steps so that all necessary steps could be taken beforehand. The minister said that the provincial government is fully capable to deal with any natural calamities and it will not tolerate any negligence or irresponsibility in this regard.The meeting was attended by Senator Taj Haider, Provincial Minister Zakat and Ushr Dost Muhammad Rahimon, Senior Member Board of Revenue Malik Israr, Secretary Rehabilitation Roshan Ali Shaikh, Director Provincial Disaster Management Authority Salman Shah, Commissioner Mirpurkhas Sajid Jamali Abro, deputy commissioners and other officers.
