SHC bars FIA action contrary to law against ex-NICL chairman

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) has barred the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) from taking any action contrary to law against former National Insurance Company Limited (NICL) chairman in an investment scam.Justice Ahmed Ali M Sheikh heading a division bench gave this restricting order on a petition filed by former NICL chief Muhammad Ayaz Khan Niazi who moved the Court against harassment by the FIA authorities. The bench directed federal law officer, National Accountability Bureau and FIA authorities to respond on the petition byAugust 29.Petitioner’s counsel said he had invested Rs 2 billion with the JS Investment Limited, but the FIA initiated an inquiry into the company’s investments in December 2013, adding a case was also lodged against his client and others at the FIA corporate circle crimes police station.He said the Supreme Court has transferred to NAB all the proceedings and cases pertaining to the NICL investment scam pending before the FIA for further investigation. Since the investigation into NICL scam had been transferred to the NAB, the FIA authorities were still harassing petitioner.He said notice was issued by the FIA to the petitioner for personal appearance for interrogation on June 17 and further calls afterwards were illegal and violation of the provisions of the FIA Act 1974 since the Authority has nothing to do with the matter following the inquiry transfer to the NAB. The Court was pleaded to restrain the FIA authorities and their subordinates from pressuring and harassing the petitioner.
