‘Sindh pursuing coal-based power projects with Centre’s help’

KARACHI: Thar Coal project is enjoying the ownership equally from federal and provincial government Sindh. 
Chief Minister Sindh Qaim Ali Shah also Chairman Thar Coal Energy Board (TCEB) said Sindh government was actively implementing the coal based power projects under the joint venture (JV) with national and international investment organisations to generate the power most probably to be started from 2017-18. 
Presiding over meeting of TCEB he said Coal Power Project was laid down by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari that reflected and accorded the national importance to this project. 
Thar Coal area posses qualitative coal reserves, which were even recognised on international forum at USA in a workshop. 
Thar Coal has potential to bring the whole country out of power crises and at present different coal based power projects were being implemented by national and international power companies under the joint venture. 
Qaim after thread base discussions and proposals constituted a technicial committee headed by managing director Thar Coal with two members from private sector for early finalising the efficient mechanism for Thar Coal tariff determination and asked committee to make it simplified which could be turn back within 2 to 3 months. 
Addressing the meeting federal Minister for Information Pervaiz Rasheed offered full support from federal government for inviting investment and implementing on the coal base power project. 
He informed the meeting federal government in its Council of Common Interest meeting has taken positive decisions about establishment of coal based power projects in the country. 
He said federal government would assists for encouraging for establishing coal based power project by providing required infrastructure and fast track official proceedings. 
He said power crises were the challenge to nation and we all have to combat it with joint efforts and organisational steps. 
The meeting was informed there were many investment companies, which either have expressed this interest or entered in to agreement bringing total investment up to $7 to $8 billion.
The Board after detailed discussion decided conversation of oil-based power plants to the Thar Coal based and recommended new power plants should be designed on the Thar Coal specification. 
The Board recommended for early implementation on the Thar-Jamshoro transmission line to restore the confidence of investors. 
The TCEB under amendment in its act has empowered it to issue letter of interest to the project having share of Sindh government and it recommended to the federal government. 
The meeting was informed 67 percent work of the first schemes of water supply completed while work on other two schemes was in progress.
