Expert suggests additional doses of anti-polio vaccine


KARACHI: Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA) Centre President Prof Dr Iqbal Memon has said that the presence of poliovirus in Pakistan is highly risky for children under five-year age group and they should be given additional doses of polio vaccine for complete prevention from the virus.He told PPI that presence of poliovirus in country needed special preventive measures and additional doses of polio vaccine for every child are vital to prevent further spread of this virus. He suggested that minimum 15 doses of polio vaccine are necessary for every child less than five years of age to achieve full immunity from virus.He explained that the children who had been given polio drops 5 to 10 times could be affected from virus as compared to those received polio vaccine 15 times. He said additional doses are necessary along with routine vaccination due to the frequent reporting of new cases in the country.Dr Memon said, “Peak season of poliovirus begins with monsoon rains and continues till November.” He said poliovirus spreads with intensity during monsoon season. Talking about the medium of poliovirus spread, he said it reaches through excretion of affected child to other children via sanitation water.He informed that a total of 67 cases had been reported across the country in 2014 out of which five were reported from Karachi so far.He advised public to adopt preventive measures and administrate additional polio vaccine to their children for complete safety.
