15.25pc increase in export of fish products


KARACHI: In pursuance to the policies framed by the present government, Ports and Shipping Minister Kamran Michael has laid emphasis on providing facilities to the Marine Fisheries Department which is working under the umbrella of Ministry of Ports and Shipping.According to reports, the exports of fish have registered a gain of 15.25% in value, and in terms of quantity, the exports have increased by 11.64% during the last eleven months. According to details, the fish and the fishery products valued at $335.732 million have been exported during the said eleven months of the Fiscal Year 2013-14, whereas, it was $291.301 million during the corresponding period of the previous Fiscal Year 2012-13. Michael has termed the performance of the Marine Fisheries Department according to the target fixation, as the target for this year was fixed at exports of $340 million and in eleven months, the department has achieved $335.732 million in exports of fish and fishery products which is surely a remarkable achievement of the present government which has laid the foundation for strengthening the national economy.This has happened due to the lifting of ban by the European Union after six years on fish and fishery exports which the present government has resolved through providing facilities to the sector on one end and on the other, the European Union have also been approached and invited by the present government to witness their concerns being removed by the Pakistani government. Similarly, the government has stopped the smuggling of fresh water fish to Afghanistan from the Torkham border and made way for legal exports. The Ministry of Ports and Shipping has keenly taken initiatives to resolve the concerns of all quarters under it, and the minister has remained very vocal and enthusiastic to resolve the concerns faced by Pakistani fishermen.
