KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain on Sunday proposed formation of “Sindh 1” for the populace considered as Sindhi by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and “Sindh 2” for rest of the province.
Addressing a large public gathering, Altaf said that he deemed the land of Sindh as his “mother” which could not be divided.
According to the MQM chief, “Sindh 2” should be carved out for Urdu speaking people as well as Pakhtun, Saraiki, Punjabi, Baloch and for all other ethnicities living in Sindh if the PPP could not protect the rights of other ethnicities in the province.
“If the Sindh government considers us equal citizens then the quota system should be abolished,” he said.
The MQM chief said that both “Sindh 1” and “Sindh 2” would work for the betterment of the country and let the world decide whether “Sindh 1” performed well or “Sindh 2”.
“If Sindh’s urban population is not accepted by the Pakistan People’s Party and not given its due rights, then there should be a separate province,” he said.
Altaf also criticised his opponents, saying that he would “expose” them.
He questioned as to why the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) supports terrorists involved in the killings of innocent Pakistanis and army personnel. “The Jamaat-e-Islami is playing games of global forces,” he alleged.
Coming hard on the MQM’s former allied partner Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Altaf said that the PPP had acted illegally in the matter of delimitation of constituencies and it did not take his party into confidence.
He claimed that “Jiyala” betrayed their leaders and abandoned the PPP in its difficult times.
Insisting his earlier presser was misquoted by the media, Altaf took on media personnel saying, “Hold your breath, today there will be additional talks as some people don’t understand until it is told or showed to them multiple times.”
The MQM chief asked the media not to cover his speech “out of context”.
“The MQM does not believe in taking revenge rather it believes in forgiving the oppressors,” Altaf said.
He said that the MQM wants to discuss all the issues at the table, which he said is a right of each political party. The legitimate voice could not be suppressed with power, he added.
He said that a lesson should be learnt from the past and rather than any bloodshed it was better to sit and talk things out.
“Today the propagandists are deciding who is loyal and who is traitor,” the MQM chief said.
Altaf said the MQM was the “only party in Pakistan” which selects and elects educated people form the middle class and gives them representation in assemblies.
