Traffic continues to be messy as wardens remain off streets

KARACHI: More than two months have passed since the city wardens were pulled back from Karachi roads and deployed for guarding the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) offices.  It is pertinent to mention here that the city wardens were introduced by former Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal in the city to overcome traffic menace. Absence of city wardens from streets is creating disturbance in managing traffic jams in this city of 20 million people. Massive traffic jams are witnessed in the city during peak hours of 7am to 10am and 5pm to 8pm. Earlier, the wardens were deployed on the roads to support traffic police in managing traffic jams. Talking to PPI, City Wardens Director Captain (r) Altaf said that 1,475 city wardens present in the department and they were deployed at the KMC offices for security. He said that the decision to pull back city wardens from Karachi roads was taken due to security concerns. He said that 15 wardens were killed during drive-by shootings in the city. “We cannot perform our duties in such a situation where we neither have security nor we are given weapons to defend ourselves,” he said.
