Karachi: The medical fraternity and representatives of doctors organizations warmly welcomed the Sindh governments decision for forming a committee to give teaching hospitals status to all district level healthcare centers in Karachi city, as saying it would largely benefit the patients.
Ex-President Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologist of Pakistan (SOGP) Dr Shershah Syed appreciated the Chief Minister Sindh, Secretary Health and other authorities of health department Sindh for constitution the committee for up-gradation the district hospitals and giving them teaching hospital status.
He said doctors community had been demanding of the government for up-gradation of hospitals and giving them teaching hospitals status since long. He said provincial governments decision would benefit the patients.
He said earlier Sindh government had declared Qatar Hospital Orangi Karachi a teaching hospital in 2002 and affiliated it with the Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), but unfortunately this decision could not be implemented.
He said in past the vice-chancellors of medical universities had created obstacles in this regard and the Qatar Hospital Orangi could not become a teaching hospital. He feared that the vice-chancellors of medical universities this time would also try their best to block the government move to upgrade the district hospital as teaching institutes.
Sectary General Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Center Dr Mirza Ali Azhar said up-gradation of hospitals would improve the service delivery of these hospitals. He said emergency and ICU services at district hospital level in Karachi would be beneficial for patients and the government would have to appointment senior professors in these hospitals. He said finally the government has accepted this PMA demand and the step would further benefit the patients as well as health practitioners.
He stressed the need of selection of the committee member on merit. He urged the government to choose honest members who would work to minimize the patient miseries and improve healthcare delivery.
Senior PMA leader Dr Samrina Hashmi said government has taken a right step at right time and medical fraternity warmly welcomes this positive step. She said training of doctors in district level hospitals would further improve healthcare quality and patients confidence on government-run healthcares.
She said these government runs hospitals would able carry out operational work round the clock after their up-gradation. She appreciated the provincial government and its health department for the decision to formation of committee.
It was pertinent to mention here that Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr Asim Hussan and Secretary Health Iqbal Durrani during a meeting a week ago had constituted a committee under the supervision of Special Secretary Health Dr Mansoor Abbas for the up-gradation of district level hospital in Karachi.
The committee would decide about the possible affiliation of the Sindh Government Hospital Saudabad, Sindh Government Hospital Liaquatabad Hospital, New Karachi Hospital, Sindh Government Qatar Hospital and Hospital Ibrahim Haideri with Jinnah Sindh Medical University, DUHS, or some private medical universities.
The other committee member including Vic-Chancellor Jinnah Sindh Medical University Prof Tariq Rafi, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dow University Prof Umer Farooq, EDO Health Karachi Dr Zafar Ejaz, Dr Salam and others. The committee would submit report within two weeks about up-gradation of hospitals and giving them teaching hospitals status.
