NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh submitted his resignation on Saturday, capping a 10-year tenure of two Congress-led governments that has been brought to an end by a defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, Indian media reported.
Manmohan, the 81-year-old, drove to the Rastrapati Bhavan from his official residence 7, Race Course Road, to submit the resignation of his Council of Ministers, the Press Trust of India reported. “The president has accepted the resignation of Manmohan Singh and has requested him and his colleagues to continue till the new government is formed,” a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.
President Pranab Mukherjee and the outgoing prime minister exchanged bouquets. Manmohan handed over his resignation and the recommendation of the cabinet for dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha, which is just a formality. After their brief meeting, Mukherjee in a rare gesture came to the forecourt of the presidential palace to see off Manmohan.
