Female polio worker shot dead in Bannu

Bannu: Terrorists continue to attack the polio teams as one more female worker was gunned down on Monday, officials said. According to the local police, the incident took place in the jurisdiction of the Cantt Police Station where unidentified gunmen opened fire on the worker, leaving her dead on the spot. It may be mentioned here that the polio teams are being attacked in almost every province of the country since last year or so. Seeing the situation, the government has provided better security facilities to the workers. According to reports, around 56 people have been killed in the militant attacks on the polio teams in Pakistan since December 2012. Militant groups such as the TTP oppose immunisation, saying it is a cover for US spying. Violence, and the threat of it, has badly hampered the campaign to finish polio in Pakistan, which along with Nigeria and Afghanistan are the only countries where the disease remains endemic. Around 91 cases of polio were recorded in Pakistan last year according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
