LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that China had announced investment in Pakistan at a time when conditions in the country were not favourable for this purpose but even then an attempt was made to create hurdles in the Chinese investment in the form of sit-ins made by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed these views while addressing a reception held in Beijing on Thursday. Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal as well as other members of the chief minister’s delegation were also present on the occasion. The chief minister said that Chinese President Xi Jinping surprised the whole world by his historic speech in Islamabad and international press and media gave a wide coverage to his announcement of $46 billion dollars investment in Pakistan. He added that the opponents of the government staged the drama of sit-ins and said that now they will see how China helps Pakistan. He said that it is lamentable that the opponents of the government are still not satisfied and do not want implementation of these agreements. He said that the elements involved in politics of sit-ins do not want to see the efforts to eliminate load-shedding from the country, with the cooperation of China, succeed. He said that speedy implementation of energy projects within a short period of sixteen months under the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is unprecedented in the history of the country. He said that seriousness of Chinese leadership can be judged from the fact that Chinese investment companies have started implementing the projects with their own capital without waiting for the loans of the Chinese banks. Shehbaz Sharif further said that work will be carried out round the clock for early completion of energy projects being implemented with the cooperation of China. He said that major energy projects with Chinese cooperation will be producing 5,000MW electricity by 2017 which will eliminate darkness from the country. Senior officials of Chinese financial and technical institutions besides Pakistanis living in Beijing attended the reception. Meanwhile, CM Shahbaz speaking at the Islamabad airport on his return from the successful visit to China said that this visit has been highly result-oriented and will accelerate the pace of implementation on the projects. He said that the hospitality shown by the Chinese leadership and the people to Pakistani delegation will always be remembered.
