LAHORE: A founding member of banned Lashkr-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) and three other suspected terrorists were killed in an alleged police encounter in the Badami Bagh area of Lahore early on Thursday. Haroon Bhatti, who was brought to Pakistan through Interpol from Dubai, was being escorted by the police to a hideout in the Malik Park area when his alleged accomplices opened fire on the police van. An encounter between police and the attackers resulted in the death of Bhatti, Umair, Umar and Nouman. Three police personnel also sustained bullet injuries in the fight. Police said the four ‘terrorists’ from the banned organisation who were killed in the encounter with CIA were involved in heinous crimes, including target killing, extortion and abduction for ransom. The government had fixed head money of Rs 2.5 million on the arrest of one of these four ‘terrorists’, Haroon Bhatti. Police said the ‘terrorists’ were involved in killing of nine officials in Army Camp Gujrat, besides murder of three police officials in Muzaffargarh. They had killed three police officials while looting a petrol pump in Khanewal, abducted Amer Malik, son-in-law of a high official, for a ransom of Rs 100 million; abducted American citizen Dr Warren Weinstein for a ransom of Rs 300 million and abducted Muhammad Umer also for ransom. Police said the ‘terrorists’ were also involved in killing of three police officials at a picket set up at the Babu Sabu interchange, besides killing of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat President Maulana Shams ur Rehman Moavia, Shakar Ali Rizvi advocate, Dr Syed Ali Haider and his son Syed Murtaza Haider.
