LAHORE: The Young Doctors Association (YDA) Punjab on Tuesday called off their protest and sit-in at all the teaching hospitals across the province after the assurance of the Punjab government to fulfil their demands, including provision of a service structure within the next two weeks.
This was announced after a brief meeting between the YDA and government representatives, including Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Khawaja Salman Rafique, Health Sectary Babar Hayat and Punjab Health DG Dr Zahid Pervaiz at the Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) auditorium.
While talking to young doctors, Khawaja Salman said that government believes that doctors are the backbone of the Punjab government and in this regard government has done work on 90 percent of their demands. He said that their required demands would be fulfilled soon.
Babar Hayat said that the Punjab Public Service Commission had selected 2,000 medical officers and the Health Department suspended those doctors who were absent for their duties as per law. He said that those doctors had the right to appeal their suspension and if they would appeal to reinstate their job then the government would reinstate them.
He said that government would also finalise the house job policy in the future.
Salman assured the YDA that their issues would be resolved step by step, including promotions, service structure, PPSC issue, PG trainee doctors issue and female house officers issue soon. After the assurance, the YDA agreed to call off their protest.
Earlier, the YDA started their protest after suspending their duties in all city hospitals on Tuesday morning. The YDA also blocked the main Jail Road in front of the Services Hospital and staged a demo in front of the SIMS. The YDA also started protest in other city hospitals as well as across the province. On the issue, the YDA said that protest would continue at all the government hospitals until their demands were fulfilled.
While talking to Daily Times, YDA Punjab President Dr Javed Aheer said that achievement of service structure for doctors was the prime priority of the association and every step would be taken to achieve it, and the struggle shall continue for this goal in case the government did not facilitate the YDA as per the negotiations.
He said that the government officials and Health Department assured them of fulfilling their demands within the next two weeks. He said that after the assurance in front of media, they decided to end their protest.
Addressing the young doctors, Salman Rafique said that doctors were the real leadership of the Health Department, as they had to run the department and provide relief to the patients. He said that the government had fulfilled the promises made with young doctors and doctors of other cadres.
