Benazir’s birthday: Wattoo opens blood donation camp at Aiwan-e-Iqbal

LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo inaugurated a blood donation camp at Aiwan-e-Iqbal on Saturday to mark the birth anniversary of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto where party workers and leaders donated blood for the brave soldiers of Pakistan Army now fighting against terrorists in North Waziristan Agency to safeguard the security of the country.
Wattoo along with PPP Lahore President Samina Khalid Khurkhi took round of the camp and appreciated the commitment of donors for the party, saying that they were expressing their rare gesture of solidarity with the army soldiers by donating their blood.
The donation of blood by Jehan Ara Wattoo, head of social media, set the inspiring tone of the anniversary followed by donation of blood by a large number of workers who were equally enthusiastic to donate their blood for the worthwhile cause.
Wattoo said that the enthusiasm of all of party workers was inspiring that showed how much they hold their leaders in high esteem and how much they adhere to the instructions of the party leaders.
Talking to the press, Wattoo said that the PPP would join any alliance that would be dedicated for the continuity and strengthening of democracy in the country, adding that all other considerations had no meaning for the party.
If there was a political alliance focused for the promotion and strengthening of democracy, he added, the PPP would give serious thought to the proposition.
He said that the track record of the PPP was testimony to the fact that it had always stood by democracy and also for rights of the less-privileged segments of society even under the most inhospitable conditions during successive dictatorships.
He strongly condemned the Model Town incident and said that we were with Dr Tahirul Qadri in sharing the grief of the bereaved families.
He said that former law minister Rana Sanaullah had been made a scapegoat to save the skin of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif because ultimate responsibility was on the shoulders of the chief minister under the narrative of collective responsibility under the parliamentary system of government.
Wattoo said that the stance of PPP Patron-in-Chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had been vindicated as he had maintained three months ago that terrorists had to be defeated on their turf because the policy of appeasement was dangerous as well as counter-productive.
Today, he said, almost entire political leadership, civil society and intelligentsia were supporting the use of force against terrorists – the only language they understand.
He welcomed the restoration of Geo TV channel, adding that the PPP firmly believed in freedom of press under Article 19 of the constitution. Freedom of media and functioning of democracy could not be separated, he added.
It may be mentioned that PPP Patron-in-Chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had issued instructions to the rank and file of the PPP to observe the birth anniversary of Benazir Bhutto in sober manner by donating blood for the brave soldiers of Pakistan Army instead of celebrating the event with cutting of cakes because the country was in a state of war.
