Lawyers resolve to resist any move to harm democracy

LAHORE: The All Pakistan Representative Lawyers Convention held under the auspices of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) on Thursday unanimously resolved to resist at any cost any unconstitutional move to destabilise democracy in the country.
Representatives of bar associations from all over the country urged the leaderships of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistani Awami Tehreek (PAT) and the government to resolve their issues through constitutional and democratic ways. They resolved that they would not allow any party or group to grab power and that it would accept the change of government only through constitutional and democratic means. They pledged to continue playing their role for protection and supremacy of the constitution and democracy.
The lawyers’ representatives also warned the superior judiciary that they would not accept any judge taking oath under thee PCO (Provisional Constitution Order) and in case of any such event, only those judges would be considered as “our” judges, who would not take oath under the PCO.
They also demanded of the Punjab government to make public the report of a judicial tribunal that was formed to probe into the Model Town incident of June 17.
Addressing the convention, LHCBA President Shahfqat Mahmood Chohan said that the convention was called to review the political situation of the country and to ensure that lawyers were united on a single point agenda and that they would not accept any violation of the constitution or any other undemocratic step. He said that the lawyers have their own agenda to protect the constitution and rule of law in the country. He said that the LHCBA had organised the convention to contemplate the prevailing situation and chalk out future strategy to meet any eventuality. He made it clear that the LHCBA was not holding the convention on account of affiliation with any political party. He said that it had been a tradition of the bar to play its role if democracy and the constitution were threatened.
LHCBA Secretary Mian Muhammad Ahmad Chachar, Sialkot District Bar Association President Shahid Mir, Gujrat District Bar Association President Chaudhry Rukhsar Ahmad, Chonian Bar Association President Rana Saeed Ahmad, Shakargarh Bar Association President Chaudhry Rasool Bukhsh, Rahim Yar Khan Bar Association Secretary Niaz Ahmad and Sindh High Court Bar Association President Z K Jatoi also addressed the convention.
They said that all political parties should learn lesson from lawyers, who conduct bar elections every year without any doubt of rigging.
They maintained that the lawyers had resisted every dictator and that they have always succeeded. They urged all political parties to resolve present political conflict with wisdom and relieve the masses from mental torture.
A number of local lawyers besides representatives of various bars attended the convention. At the end, a group of lawyers belonging to the PTI started chanting slogans against PML-N leadership. They demanded registration of a case against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and others over Model Town killings.
