LAHORE: The Punjab government decided to extend the deadline to get computerised arms licences while keeping in view a report that stated one million arms of different categories, excluding the ones prohibited, are still being registered through National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). Many arms were registered at the district level in the past through manual registration system so the government launched the drive to register the weapons through NADRA to find out fake licences and illegal weapons. Under National Action Plan (NAP), the Home Department registered more than 450,000 arms of different categories across the province in record time during the ongoing drive launched by the government in January 2015. Official sources revealed that during a period of one year from January to December 2015, the government facilitation centre and NADRA’s offices issued computerised licences to arms of various categories. All these weapons were under the non-prohibited category, as only the federal authorities have the power to issue permits of prohibited arms. Sources stated that the last date to apply for a computerised licence has been extended without fixing a deadline to get the maximum number of weapons under the new database. The Punjab government is committed to implementing the NAP in letter and spirit for the protection of the life and property of the people, the sources maintained. After the completion of the current drive, the government would cancel all the licences and launch a crackdown against illegal weapons across Punjab during which violators would have to face punishments and fines in accordance with the law. This initiative by the government would not only bring the weapons on the agencies concerned record, but also would discourage the crimes committed through illegal arms.
