LAHORE: More than 25 people including children were injured on Sunday when around 300 gas-filled balloons exploded on Kamaha Road in Nishter Colony police area.
The incident injured more than 25 persons, including children, when they were playing in the playground situated in Dokalan Village, Kamaha Road. On being informed, a number of locals gathered at the spot and immediately shifted all the injured persons to nearby hospitals. Eyewitnesses said that at least 300 gas balloons were released during the inauguration ceremony of the Walton flyover in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
The affected children were rushed to the nearest hospital by the locals. A police investigator said that preliminary findings indicated the balloons had exploded due to the sweltering heat. “The balloons were filled with gas and the weather was extremely hot, so the balloons exploded,” he said. Rescue 1122 shifted twelve children who had suffered minor burns, from Lahore General Hospital to Jinnah Hospital, the spokesman said. Condition of a child was said to be critical.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken notice of the incident and directed the Lahore DCO to look into the incident and submit a report in this regard. In another incident, a rickshaw driver was shot dead by his three relatives over minor issue in Nishtar Colony limits. The deceased was identified as Robin Masih, father of three, resident of Yuhunabada No 2. Police investigator said that the victim’s wife, Shaheen Bibi, told the police that her husband had gone to park his rickshaw in the parking lot when the accused Waseem alias Nikko Masih, Naseem Masih and Talib Masih quarreled with him over some minor issue, later they fired shots at him and escaped from the scene.
The injured Robin was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Police shifted the body to morgue for autopsy and registered a case against accused persons on the complaint of deceased’s wife Shaheen Bibi. Also, a father of four committed suicide by hanging himself with a rope in Wahdat Colony police area. The deceased was identified as Faisal Saleem of Al-Hamad Colony Wahdat Colony. Police said that Saleem was mentally disturbed due to domestic issues and divorced his wife almost ten days back. On the day of incident, Saleem locked himself up in a room and ended his life by hanging himself with a rope. Police handed over the body to the heirs after completing legal formalities.
Also, a 50-year-old man was gunned down by some unidentified persons in the limits of Shalimar police station area. The deceased was identified as Shabir Ahmad of Hajveri Park Ghosia Chowk. On the day of incident, the victim Shabir Ahmad was sitting in his grocery shop when some unidentified persons approached him and shot and wounded him.
The injured Shabir was rushed to a local hospital where doctors pronounced him brought dead. Police shifted the body to morgue for autopsy and registered a case against the unknown murderers on the complaint of the victim’s son Hassan.
