LAHORE: Another 14-year-old maid was allegedly raped and severely tortured by her landlord in the limits of Defence A Police on Saturday.
The maid was admitted to Services Hospital’s ICU ward, where her condition is said to be critical.
The cases of violence against domestic workers are increasing in the city. Earlier, a 10-year-old girl was tortured to death by her employer in Askari 9 flats, while a 16-year-old was strangled by her landlord in the Faisal Town area during the first 17 days of the current year.
Police have arrested Prof Salman Rafique, the owner of the house in Defence where the girl was tortured, and registered a case against him on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Muhammad Asghar.
The injured girl, identified as Fiza, hailed from Sialkot. Sources said that the victim was severely tortured by her house owner over unknown reasons on Friday night. The owner then took her to a local private hospital, when her condition deteriorated.
They said that the administration of the hospital refused to treat her due to her serious condition and they also believed that this is a police case. The doctors also advised the owner to immediately take her to a public hospital; otherwise she might die.
Later, the victim was shifted to Services Hospital where the administration informed the police about the injured girl. Police reached the spot and immediately started investigation. The news of this brutal torture spread across the city. Senior police officers and government officials reached the hospital and inquired after the injured girl.
Doctors said the girl had bruises on her face, head and other parts of the body, with no surety whether or not her life could be saved.
They said the next 24 hours were crucial for her. They said that a team of senior doctor was also available and best medical treatment was being provided to her.
Meanwhile, Cantt SP Umar Cheema said the victim had been hospitalised and shifted to the surgical ICU, where initial medical examination confirmed that the victim was also sexually assaulted. Police said the parents of the girl were being contacted.
On the other hand, the house owner denied torturing the maid, and claimed that she had sustained injuries by falling. He blamed the girl for being involved in incidents of theft in the past.
Defence A Police Station investigation in-charge Rana Ghulam Abbas told Daily Times that it was observed during investigation that the house owner used to torture her in the past.
He said that initially the case seemed to be that of sexual harassment and tortured, but the actual picture would be cleared after a detailed medical report and the statement of the victim. He said that doctors were not allowing police or anyone to meet her.
Talking to Daily Times, an International Labour Organisation (ILO) spokesman said the government should ensure proper legislation and implementation of the law to help control the problem of violence against domestic workers.
He said it was really hard to go door-to-door and check any violation of the law, however, this important issue needed immediate attention of the government.
