Seminar on haemophilia urges avoiding intra-family marriages


LAHORE: Intra-family marriages in which bleeding disorders prevail are the biggest cause of haemophilia.This was the upshot of speeches at a seminar arranged by the Sundas Foundation in collaboration with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Thursday to mark the International Haemophilia Day. Sundas Foundation Chairman Monnoo Bhai, LCCI President Sohail Lashari, Sundas Foundation President Yasin Khan and Prof Dr Aslam Khan were prominent among the speakers.Lashari said that the government should ensure that every citizen was provided with a free blood screening facility. He stressed the need for launching a public awareness campaign to make the country free from this disease. He said that millions of children across the world were suffering from haemophilia, which needed immediate attention of nations individually as well as collectively. Lashari said that the LCCI would continue to extend every possible support to the Sundas Foundation towards this noble cause.He said that Western countries have controlled the disease through innovative methodologies; therefore, the Pakistan government should also take cue from them to overcome the challenge.Monnoo Bhai said that a lack of awareness among the masses was main cause behind the increase in haemophilia. He said that the disease was a genetically transmitted blood disorder, which had affected millions of people around the world and that its further proliferation could only be slashed down by avoiding Intra-family marriages.Yasin Khan appealed to the people, non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to generously donate so that the deserving haemophilia patients could undergo clinical care besides having free blood transfusion services. He also called upon the media to create awareness among the masses to stop further proliferation of the blood disorder.The speakers eulogised the services of Sundas Foundation that is working tirelessly for well-being of haemophilia patients.
