LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan once again wants his all time love, Abdul Razzak Dawood, in the prime minister’s office after a “successful long march that will result in the ouster of the PML-N government”.
Men at the helm of affairs say that Dawood has postponed his business trip to India and decided to stay in the country.
The PTI chief is emphasising on termination of the Nawaz regime as “it has been installed as a result of engineered elections”.
Imran Khan had made six demands: vote recount in four National Assembly constituencies of Lahore, Sialkot and Lodhran; establishment of an independent commission to scrutinise the May 2013 general elections; initiation of action against the returning officers found involved in rigging; fresh parliamentary polls if rigging proved in the elections; reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and electoral reforms.
Initially, the government did not pay heed to the demands, but Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on August 12 accepted some of the demands and agreed on forming a commission comprising three Supreme Court judges.
Reacting to Nawaz Sharif’s speech, Imran Khan while addressing a press conference ruled out all options of reconciliation with the Nawaz-led government, saying that his differences with the PML-N chief were not personal but ideological as Nawaz appointed his relatives to key posts and opened another gateway of nepotism and corruption.
Imran Khan is adamant to accept any offer made by the government and is sure that he would be successful in pressing the PM to resign and installing a caretaker set up consisting of technocrats.
It is learnt that Imran Khan has hinted at the possibility of Dawood heading the caretaker government. Imran opened his heart to some of his very close and trusted aides.
Dawood is an entrepreneur who is currently the Descon Group chairman and has also served as the former director of the State Bank of Pakistan and as managing director of the Descon Engineering Ltd, Dawood Hercules Chemicals Limited and Lawrencepur Woollen and Textile Mills Limited.
He is the former chairman of the Lahore Advisory Board Management Association of Pakistan.
The most important thing is that Dawood has been a member of the board of governors of Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital and Research Centre for years. He is currently serving as the rector, Lahore University of Management Sciences; vice chairman board of governors, National Management Foundation. He has obtained an MBA degree from the Columbia University, the US and a graduate in mining engineering from Newcastle University, the UK. Dawood has served as commerce minister in the cabinet of General (r) Pervez Musharraf.
This is not the first time Imran Khan has reposed his trust in Dawood. In 2013, the PTI gave names of Dawood and Shaoib Suddle for the caretaker prime minister.
The business and political circles have shown their concern as Dawood failed to give results during his tenure as a federal minister.
