Bail granted to Gullu Butt challenged in SC

LAHORE: The prosecution department has filed a petition before the Supreme Court of Pakistan challenging bail granted by a division bench of the Lahore High Court to Shahid Aziz, alias Gullu Butt, who is an accused of damaging vehicles and cars parked outside Minhajul Quran Secretariat on June 17. The prosecutor general petitioned that it was a case of terrorism and concession of bail to such an accused could create unrest. He requested the apex court to set aside the LHC order of granting bail to Gullu Butt. The LHC division bench had on August 12 ordered to release Gullu Butt on furnishing bail bonds in the sum of Rs 200,000. Gullu Butt was caught smashing cars during the clashes between Pakistan Awami Tehreek workers and the police outside the Minhajul Quran International Secretariat on June 17 on live TV coverage. He smashed windscreens and windows of private vehicles with his club, while police officials looked on and the vandalism continued unabated. The Faisal Town police had lodged a case against Gullu Butt. An anti-terrorism court had earlier rejected the bail application of the accused.
