LAHORE: A session of the Punjab Assembly would be held today (Friday) under the chair of Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan.
Punjab Governor Mohammad Sarwar summoned the session on the request of treasury and it is likely to continue for the next two weeks. Different bills, including an amendment bill about local government, and several adjournment motions submitted by the opposition as well the treasury members would also be tabled during the session. On Thursday, a day before the session, the opposition party in the assembly, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) filed an adjournment motion to oppose the act of the provincial government of deduction of funds of the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) Lahore.
The motion was filed jointly by three legislators of PML-Q – Amir Sultan Cheema, Dr Muhammad Afzal, and Ahmad Shah Khagga. They warned the government that more than five thousand patients’ lives are on stake after a heavy cut in the funds of PIC. In the motion they have argued that although the doctors of the PIC have prescribed heart by-pass to more than 5,000 patients enrolled with the institute but due to lack of funds they are not being given proper treatment and their lives are under threat. They said the deduction in PIC funds was a serious matter.
Movers of the adjournment motion also asked the provincial government of PML-N to inform the Punjab Assembly where the money saved through cutting PIC funds was being spent. Later, while talking to journalists, they demanded the government take notice of “mismanagement and injustice” at the government level that is damaging the provincial infrastructure at every level.
