LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo on Sunday criticised the present government “for political victimisation of the PPP leaders”.
Wattoo said the party’s “support for democracy” should not be treated as its weakness. He said in a statement issued here on Sunday that the politically motivated cases against former Prime Ministers Yousaf Raza Gilani and former Federal Minister for Commerce and Trade Makhdoom Amin Fahim should be dropped because politics of victimisation was counter-productive and self-defeating and country’s history was testimony to it.
Wattoo urged upon the government to desist from repeating the history, which was the stated commitment contained in the Charter of Democracy (CoD) signed on May 14, 2006 in London between the two Parties—PPP and the PML-N. He pointed out that during the previous PPP government’s five years tenure there not a single political prisoner in the country adding the Party completed the tenure while practicing the policy of reconciliation in letter and spirit. PPP Punjab head added that the politics of vendetta was a flagrant violation of the democratic practices and therefore should be jettisoned for all times to come.
PPP Punjab head said that the politics of witch-hunting had inflicted irreparable damages to the federation and to the democracy and it was incumbent upon the political leadership to exhibit statesmanship because the country could not afford the politics of brinkmanship when it was on the cross road of its destiny.
