LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo has described the statement of Major General (r) Athar Abbas, a former director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), as “inappropriate, unwise, ill-timed and issued without going into the veracity of the contents.”
It is pertinent to mention here that Maj Gen Abbas reportedly claimed that former army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani was indecisive in lunching military operation against terrorists in North Waziristan due to the fear of backlash.
In a statement on Tuesday, the PPP Punjab president said that he (Gen Abbas) should have not given such statement about the former army chief, who was his boss. He added that this statement had neither boosted the morale of the people of the country nor helped the ongoing military operation in any way against terrorists, who had challenged the writ of the state.
Wattoo also recalled that PPP Patron-in-Chief Bilawal Bhutto had in his speech in Larkana raised his powerful voice against terrorists when he said that they were neither Muslims, nor followers of Islam or Pakistanis because they did not recognise the writ of the state, the constitution and our way of life.
He further said that the government, civil society organisations and political leadership were supporting the military operation, which indeed was vindication of the position taken by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari from the outset.
He said that as per the instructions of Patron-in-Chief Bilawal to help out the internally displaced persons (IDPs), the Punjab chapter of the party had set up committees at district level to collect donations and divisional co-coordinators had been assigned the task of supervising the collection of donations in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Sahiwal divisions.
He referred to his recent meeting with Opposition Leader Syed Khurshid Shah, who is chairman of the IDP’s committee while he was himself a member of the committee, and said that PPP Punjab Deputy Secretary Mian Muhammd Ayub had been appointed co-coordinator, who would be responsible for overall collection and dispatch of donations.
He also appealed the party workers to adopt a family of IDPs to meet its expenses during the holy month of Ramazan and beyond. He also recalled that magnitude of the IDPs as compared to Swat operation was much easier to handle because at that time, the number of IDPs was 3 million whereas IDPs from North Waziristan were around half a million only.
