Attack on journalists condemned


LAHORE: The Lahore Press Club and other journalist organisations on Sunday condemned the attack on journalists during clashes between protesters and police in Islamabad and announced to hold black day on Tuesday. The LPC, Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), Electronic Media Reporters Association (EMRA), Punjab Union of Journalists (PUJ), Education Reporters Association (ERA), Lahore Photojournalists Association, Health Reporters Association, lawyers and civil society held a protest rally from the press club to the CM’s Office to protest against the brutal torture. The police officials attacked some forty journalists while they were covering the clashes between police and the protesters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) that erupted after the protesters began a march towards the Prime Minister’s House late on Saturday night in Islamabad. Other than torturing several journalists, the police officers also smashed the DSNG vans of as many as seven media houses. Police also charged the cameramen and photographers with batons while damaging their cameras. Using brutal force, the police on night between Saturday and Sunday targeted journalists who were covering the protest. PFUJ President Rana Azeem, LPC President Arsahd Ansari, LPC General Secretary Shahbaz Mian, Lahore PTI President Abdul Aleem Khan, PML-Q Leader Amna Ulfat and others addressed the rally and demanded government to arrest the real culprits as soon as possible. While addressing on occasion, Arshad Ansari said that attack on journalists was the brutal state sponsored torture, which has no similarity in history of Pakistan. He said that journalists across Pakistan will observe Tuesday as Black Day and black flag will be hoisted on press clubs across country. He said that FIR would be lodged against Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar and the Islamabad IG. Rana Azeem said, “We will not take rest until the FIR will be lodged against Chaudhry Nisar. Journalists would hold protest outside CM house on daily basis.” ERA President Adnan Lodhi in a statement condemned the incident and demanded government to arrest real culprits behind the scene who ordered to attack media person. He said that such type of brutal tortured have not been used by dictators even.
