LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-backed opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed has submitted a resolution against two public holidays in a week, demanding ending the holiday on Saturday.
After filing the resolution in the assembly secretariat’s notice branch the opposition leader confirmed to the media persons that he had submitted a resolution asking the House to end the Saturday holiday in the province so there could be one more working day in a week, which would facilitate the masses.
He said that the five-day working week was causing difficulties for the general public, and the working days should be extended to six from the current five to provide relief to the common man. Rasheed told journalists that the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government has failed to give any relief to the people. Answering a question, he said that talks with the Taliban would succeed only if the government shows seriousness. He also said that former military dictator Pervez Musharraf and his companions should be punished.
The PTI Punjab held a separate meeting on Thursday and passed a resolution against law and order situation, especially violence against women and gang rapes in the province, vowing to raise the issue in the Punjab Assembly in its next session. The Punjab chapter of the party has called a meeting today (Saturday) to discuss the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. It passed a resolution that states that continuous rise in gang-rape was unacceptable and PTI’s violence-against-women forum will take up this issue in the provincial assembly to demand an investigation. While addressing the meeting, PTI Punjab President Ejaz Chaudhry said that the recent incident in Muzaffargarh where a jirga sanctioned a woman’s rape is a confirmation of the fact that there is no government in the province.
He asked the Punjab law minister why was he not answerable to the public on this spiralling rise in gang-rape and non-prosecution of perpetrators.
Party’s provincial secretary Dr Yasmin Rashid announced that the forum of PTI would visit the area and probe the incident. Information Secretary Andleeb Abbas said that such an act was a kind of terrorism against women not only because it was a physical abuse of the victim but also because its psychological abuse.
