HAFIZABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s candidate Nighat Intisar defeated her rivals on Thursday in the by-poll in PP-107 (Pindi Bhattian) constituency by bagging a total of 41,213 votes, as per the unofficial results.
Second in the race was Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Sarfraz Khan Bhatti, who bagged 33,781 votes. Bhatti and Nghat Intasar of the PTI were the prime contestants for the seat. It is pertinent to mention here that PP-107 was vacated after an independent candidate, Shoaib Shahnawaz, was declared ineligible by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) after allegations of rigging against him were proved. PTI Chairman Imran Khan congratulated Nighat Intesar over her victory. Nighat is the first directly elected woman from the PTI. Imran also thanked all the workers and office-bearers of the party who, he said, made this victory possible “despite PML-N’s pressure tactics and efforts at rigging”. Meanwhile, clashes between rivals partially disrupted the election polling at some places.
In one incident, scores of PTI workers surrounded PML-N’s woman MPA Salma Butt and pushed her when she arrived at a polling station. However, she managed to leave in her car. The incident comes a day after Salma Butt slapped a male PTI MPA, Asif Mahmood, in the Punjab Assembly allegedly for making derogatory remarks about her leader.
