KARACHI: Canadian High Commissioner Greg Giokas met leading agriculturalists from Sindh at two separate roundtables.
One roundtable was hosted by Hassan Ali Chaniho, chairman of Horticulture Board of Pakistan and an ex-minister of agriculture in the Sindh government, and the other roundtable was with the Pakistan Agriculture Coalition group and its sponsors.
High Commissioner Greg Giokas noted, “Pakistan has a strong, dynamic and diversified agriculture and food sector and… with the right direction and policies based on consultations with all stakeholders, the agriculture sector can play an important role in the development of Pakistan’s economy and promote regional prosperity and stability.”
“Increasing yields in the agriculture sector will provide employment and livelihoods for millions of people. And by strengthening its agriculture sector, Pakistan will play a leadership role in trade and investment in the region,” Giokas said.
“Pakistan will also get economic benefits from opening its market to India and the rest of the world, as it will provide greater stability and much needed prosperity to Pakistan and the region. Pakistan has many competitive advantages, a very good infrastructure, a growing workforce and the agriculture sector is a particular strength”.
The participants discussed next steps and emphasised on the issue of price stabilisation to be looked at. The role of media in sensitising the government and the farmers in rural area was highly encouraged.
