Qadri’s APC asks Shahbaz Sharif to step down as chief minister

Participants demand three-member Supreme Court bench to investigate Model Town tragedy

LAHORE – An all parties conference (APC), called by the Pakistan Awami Tehreek, on Sunday demanded resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif over the Model Town tragedy, private news channels reported.

At least 50 members of political and religious parties participated in the conference while the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the largest opposition party, and the Awami National Party avoided the gathering.

Condemning the killings in Model Town, the conference issued a five-point statement demanding formation of a three-member bench of the Supreme Court to investigate the tragedy, in which 14 people were killed and around 80 injured.

Awami Tehreek leader Tahirul Qadri asked President Mamnoon Hussain to exercise his role as leader and force Shahbaz Sharif to resign as the chief minister. He suggested that the Punjab police chief, deputy inspector general operations, home secretary, district coordination officer, SSP, Model Town SP and CCPO should be arrested over the tragedy.

Former prime minister and Pakistan Muslim League President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad and Muttahida Qaumi Movement Rabita committee member Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui among the prominent participants.
