ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has sought clarification from the government on what party’s vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi said were ‘contradictory’ statements.
Qureshi was referring statements of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Interior Affairs Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali in the National Assembly that the government neither requested nor had the army asked to act as a mediator in the present political crisis.
According to Qureshi, it was Nisar who had requested to the army to play a role. The PTI vice chairman said they were shocked after hearing the statements made by the government in the National Assembly. “We have sought a clarification from the government before the next round of dialogue can be held.”
Qureshi said that his party wanted to strengthen democracy in Pakistan and their fight was not for any individual. He dismissed Nawaz's assertion, terming the government confused. He stated that the government's stance was a 'volte-face' as compared to what was discussed on Thursday.
The PTI leader said that his party leadership had responded to the government's negotiation offers in a positive manner. He said that the party was open to talks.
