ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Tuesday said that strong defence guaranteed a nation’s solidarity and identity, besides providing it confidence and courage to live with dignity among the comity of nations.
In his message to the nation on Youm-e-Takbeer, marking May 28, 1998, the day Pakistan conducted its nuclear tests and became the first Muslim nuclear power, the president said that it was a natural right of every nation and society to secure its survival and solidarity.
“The nations which are oblivious to their stability, survival and achievements, or indulged in bargaining, or compromises, became chapters of the past,” he added.
The president said that when such occasions arose, the national leadership had to take bold and decisive decisions. In 1998 and on the same day, the elected leadership took a decision which was not only need of the hour but also a collective voice of the nation. It was the occasion which practically manifested the strong and collective resolve of the nation and its leadership to offer all kind of sacrifices for the country, he added.
The president said today the country was confronted with a host of internal and external challenges and it was imperative that we should move ahead in unity, keeping in view the sayings of Quaid-i-Azam which would serve as beacons of light.
“The impregnable defence of the country, its solidarity and development is our collective responsibility,” he said, adding that on this memorable day, we have to reiterate our resolve to work with sincerity, integrity and patriotism, so that our country emerges as a strong one on all fronts. The president also paid tributes to those people who had made the defence of the country formidable. “I also salute personnel of Pakistan Army, law enforcement agencies, all Pakistanis including sisters, brothers, youth, children and aged, who had rendered sacrifices for the country’s integrity and honour,” he added.
Meanwhile, congratulating the nation on the 16th anniversary of “Youm-e-Takbeer,” Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has assured it that Pakistan has a strong defence against any aggression.
“Our nuclear assets that are guarantee of national security are in safe hands and the same fact has been expressed and reiterated by numerous international institutions.”
The prime minister, however, emphasised that Pakistan being a responsible nation was playing a vibrant role in the comity of nations. “Let me state on this occasion that our nuclear capability should not be a point of concern for anyone as it is only for peaceful purpose and for the welfare of our people,” he added.
