BANNU: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday announced to increase the cash compensation for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan Agency to Rs 40,000 in the holy month of Ramazan and vowed to rid the country of the menace of terrorism.
He said this while addressing a gathering of the IDPs after attending a high-level briefing on NWA operation and the arrangements made for the facilitation of IDPs. Major General Rao briefed the prime minister about the operation in the agency. Khyebr Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmed Khan, Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, Federal Ministers for Information and Broadcasting Pervaiz Rashid and Federal Minister for SAFRON Abdul Qadar Baloch, Peshawar Corps Commander Lt General Khalid Rabbani were also present on the occasion.
Prime Minister Nawaz said that the government had decided to increase the monthly cash compensation of the IDPs from Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000, including Rs 3,000 as monthly house rent and Rs 5,000 for non-food items. However, the IDPs would be given Rs 40,000 as cash compensation for the month of Ramazan, which includes Rs 20,000 Ramazan package. The prime minister told the IDPs that he was aware of their difficulties and sentiments, as leaving native homes was not an easy task. He said that he was confident that this problem would be resolved soon and the IDPs would return to their homes with honour and dignity.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said his government was well aware of the problems of dislocated people of NWA and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to utilisaiton of all the available resources for provision of speedy assistance, rehabilitation and ensuring their early resettlement in their houses. The prime minister said there was no dearth of resources and the government would ensure provision of assistance, rehabilitation, relief and early settlement process.
He said the IDPs were passing through a difficult time and their sacrifices would not go waste. He said that the government was working day and night to provide all the basic amenities of life to the dislocated people to lessen their difficulties. The government and army, he said, were working together day and night with the prime objective of providing comfort and relief to their tribal brethren. “This is not a kindness to them. We are fulfilling our duties,” he said, adding the government would ensure that the IDPs are repatriated to their homes with honour and dignity.
Nawaz Sharif said the IDPs would be helped in the reconstruction phase once the situation improves in NWA. He said a survey would be carried out to assess damages to houses and other infrastructure soon after completion of the operation. He said the government would repair and improve the basic infrastructure, including roads, health, clean drinking water facilities, schools and hospitals, etc, once law and order situation improves in the area. Nawaz Sharif said rebuilding and reconstruction phase in North Waziristan will not only generate employment opportunities for the tribal people but would also open up areas for trade and investment. He said it would alleviate poverty and bring progress and prosperity.
